Bair Island gives Redwood City a restored tidal-marsh walk

Bair Island sits beside Redwood City as a restored tidal-marsh area tied to Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge and state ecological reserve lands.

Redwood City has a bayfront side that feels very different from downtown. Bair Island is the place that makes that clear, with restored tidal marsh, levee paths, birds, and wide views across the South Bay.

The larger Don Edwards refuge was created in 1972 and is known as the nation’s first urban national wildlife refuge. Bair Island is part of that bigger Bay story. It includes Inner, Middle, and Outer islands, with about 3,000 acres total and a large state ecological reserve area.

This is not a loud beach or a picnic lawn. It is more of a slow walk, birding, and habitat place. The access details matter: parts of the reserve can close seasonally, and winter flooding can change what is passable. Check the current federal and state pages before heading out.
