Batiquitos Lagoon is Carlsbad's quieter coastal side

Batiquitos Lagoon Ecological Reserve protects coastal wetland habitat in Carlsbad, with trail access, wildlife viewing, limited parking, and rules that differ from the beach.

Carlsbad has beach days, but Batiquitos Lagoon is the quieter coastal side. CDFW manages the ecological reserve for shoreline, marshland, and riparian habitat.

The reserve covers 544 acres. Hiking and wildlife viewing are popular, but parking is limited and fishing is only allowed in designated bridge areas. That is different from a regular beach outing.

South Carlsbad State Beach has its own rules nearby, so do not mix the two. Before going, check the official lagoon page for trail access and the State Parks page if your plan includes the beach.
