Generators need fresh air, not a cracked door

Public health and fire safety guidance is clear that portable generators belong outside and away from openings during outages.

Portable generators are useful during outages, but they need open air. A garage, porch, balcony, breezeway, carport, shed, or cracked door is still too close if exhaust can drift inside.

The safe pattern is simple: keep the generator outside, away from doors and windows, and follow the fuel and extension-cord directions. Carbon monoxide has no smell, so a person may not get an early warning from their own senses.

This is especially worth remembering during wildfire shutoffs, winter storms, and heat waves. Check the carbon monoxide alarms before outage season. If an alarm sounds, leave the building and use emergency help instead of hunting for the source inside.
