Heat plans should include a real cooling place

CDPH extreme heat pages and cooling center guidance show why heat planning should include local public places, county resources, and a check-in plan.

Heat plans work better when they name a real place before the house gets too warm. In many places, that may be a library, senior center, community center, mall, or other cool public space.

Heat risk can build over several days. Warm nights can make it harder to recover. Older adults, outdoor workers, babies, pets, and people without steady cooling may need a more careful plan.

Before the hottest afternoon, find the local cooling option. Write down hours, rides, pet rules, and who needs a check-in call. If someone seems very sick from heat, switch from planning to urgent medical help.
