Wild mushrooms are not a guess-and-cook food
California public-health guidance says not to eat wild mushrooms; after a possible ingestion, call Poison Control immediately and do not wait for symptoms.
After rain, California parks, yards, and open spaces can sprout mushrooms that look interesting enough to bring home. That does not make them food.
Wild mushroom identification is difficult, and some poisonous mushrooms look ordinary. A photo, app, folk test, taste, or cooking method cannot make an unknown mushroom safe. California public-health guidance is simple: do not pick or eat wild mushrooms; use mushrooms from a trusted market.
If someone may have eaten one, call California Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 right away. Do not wait for symptoms and do not induce vomiting. Keep a piece for identification if that can be done safely. If the person has severe vomiting, diarrhea, stomach pain, trouble breathing, a seizure, collapse, or another emergency sign, call 911 first and then Poison Control.
