Jury summons questions go through the local court
Respond through the court named on the summons; California superior-court and federal jury systems have different portals, and ignoring a summons can carry penalties.
Read the summons now. Respond by the method and date printed on it. First, find the name of the court that sent it. A California superior-court summons goes through that county court. A federal summons goes through the named U.S. District Court. Their websites, excuse rules, and reporting steps are different.
For California jury service, a qualified person must report as directed unless excused or postponed. The Judicial Branch warns that not responding may lead to a fine of up to $1,500, jail, or both. Check a group number the night before only if the court tells you to. The response date printed on the paper still applies.
Contact the issuing jury office right away with questions. This includes a request about delay, hardship, access for a disability, language, a moved address, or a lost summons. A request does not excuse you unless the court grants it. Keep the summons and your confirmation until the court says your service is complete.
