The Fox Theatre keeps downtown Visalia tied to its 1930 stage

The Visalia Fox Theatre first opened in 1930 and still gives downtown a restored performing-arts landmark with a strong local story.

Downtown Visalia has a landmark that is easy to miss if you only think of the city as the gateway to the Sierra. The Fox Theatre opened in February 1930.

William Fox of Fox West Coast Theatres built it. Los Angeles architects Floyd Stanbery and Clifford Balch designed it. Inside, the theatre has an East Indian theme. Look for the large genie above the stage arch and temple-style details beside the stage.

Visalian Friends of the Fox Theatre formed in 1996. The local nonprofit worked to acquire, restore, and reopen the building as a performing arts venue. For a visit, check the current event page. The building is easiest to enjoy when something is on the calendar.
