Victorville's logistics airport grew from George Air Force Base
Victorville has a big desert reuse story hiding in plain sight. Southern California Logistics Airport covers about 2,200 acres of the former George Air Force Base. It sits in the northwest part of the city.
The military story began in 1941. That is when construction started on what was then Victorville Army Air Field. It served as an advanced flying school. The base grew to include barracks, hangars, shops, hospitals, warehouses, and social buildings. Later it became George Air Force Base.
The base was decommissioned in December 1992. Today the airfield is part of SCLA, run by the City of Victorville. The airport now serves aviation work such as aircraft maintenance, testing, research, asset management, and aircraft end-of-life services.
For most people, SCLA is not a normal sightseeing stop. Its value is in understanding the city. The long rows of aircraft and wide-open airport land show how Victorville turned an old air base into a modern high-desert job and logistics place.
