Minter Field keeps Shafter's World War II aviation layer visible

Minter Field near Shafter began as a U.S. Army flight training center in 1941 and is now remembered through the airport district and air museum.

ShafterMinter Fieldaviation history

Shafter has a World War II aviation story sitting right beside its farm-country identity. Minter Field was built under the Defense Landing Area Program and opened in 1941 as a U.S. Army flight training center.

During the war, it worked like a small city. The airport district history lists services such as a chapel, swimming pool, theater, post office, and infirmary for the thousands of people stationed there. The Army ran the field from 1941 to 1949.

After the war, the airfield moved into county hands, and the Minter Field Airport District formed in 1985. Today, the air museum keeps the aviation story visible with exhibits, artifacts, programs, and community events.

For Shafter, this adds a different layer to the farm-country setting. The fields around town are part of the story, but so is the old training field where pilots, crews, instructors, and families passed through during the war years.
