Almanac note · Rules and licenses
Santa Monica business licenses can need extra forms
Santa Monica's business-license page separates online applications, business types, regulatory permits, supplemental forms, zoning review, fees, and update forms, so the exact activity matters.
Santa Monica businesses can be straightforward, but the first step depends a lot on the activity. A cafe, home business, sidewalk vendor, delivery business, commercial landlord, massage business, vehicle vendor, or street performer can land in a different form set.
The business-license resources page says the online application is the quickest path, then separates common business types, regulatory permit applications, supplemental forms, zoning review forms, fee information, and change-of-information forms. It also explains that a business license certificate comes after the application and any needed regulatory permits are approved.
Before applying, gather the business address, business type, ownership information, gross receipts if relevant, seller’s permit or state license if relevant, and whether the business is commercial, residential, mobile, delivery-only, event-based, or public-sidewalk related. If the location is in a special district or the use is unusual, zoning review may be part of the package.
Santa Monica is compact and rule-heavy in some places because so many homes, visitors, beaches, restaurants, offices, and public spaces sit close together. The form list is the map.
