Alum Rock Park puts a canyon trip inside San Jose
Alum Rock Park is a 720-acre San Jose canyon park and California's oldest municipal park.
Alum Rock Park is one of San Jose’s best reminders that the city reaches right into the foothills. You can be in town, then be in a canyon. That makes it a natural first outdoor stop for someone trying to understand San Jose beyond freeways and office parks.
Founded in 1872, Alum Rock Park is California’s oldest municipal park. Its 720 acres sit in Alum Rock Canyon, with hiking, horseback riding, bicycling, picnicking, and quiet places to relax. The old mineral springs and health-spa history give the park a little extra story under the trees.
For a first visit, keep the plan simple. A walk, a picnic, and a longer trail day are all different uses of the park. If you are bringing a bike, planning around picnic areas, or trying to see the older park features, review rules and access details.
