Star of India gives San Diego's harbor a ship with a long memory
Star of India at the Maritime Museum of San Diego is an 1863 sailing ship with a hard-working global past and a strong local place on the waterfront.
Star of India is easy to spot on San Diego’s waterfront, but the ship’s story is much wider than the harbor. It began life in 1863 on the Isle of Man under the name Euterpe, when iron sailing ships were still unusual.
The early voyages were rough. The ship’s history includes storms, long ocean travel, and work carrying people and cargo across the world. Later it became part of San Diego’s maritime story, where volunteers, museum staff, and visitors helped keep the ship visible instead of letting it fade into a footnote.
That is what makes the stop feel special. You are looking at a working artifact from the age of sail tied to a modern California harbor.
Check the museum’s current hours and ship access before going. If the ship is open to board, give yourself enough time to slow down. The details are small at first: rigging, decks, tight spaces, old iron, and the feeling that San Diego’s waterfront has been connected to faraway places for a very long time.
