Ventura City Hall still feels like a courthouse on the hill

Ventura City Hall began as the 1912-13 Ventura County Courthouse, with terra cotta, marble, a copper dome, public art, and school tour possibilities.

VenturaCity Hallhistoric courthouse

Ventura City Hall has the kind of presence that explains itself from the sidewalk. It was built in 1912-13 as the Ventura County Courthouse, then purchased and restored by the city in 1971.

The building is a State of California Historical Landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Its big visual pieces are easy to notice: a gleaming terra cotta exterior, copper-sheathed dome, Italian marble foyer, coffered ceilings, Council Chambers, and views over the Pacific and downtown.

Inside, the building also carries public art. The municipal art collection on the first and second floors includes 100 works by 70 artists. Educational tours can connect students with local government, architecture, history, art, and the roles of city departments.

That gives City Hall a fuller job than an office address. It is a working government building that still shows Ventura’s county-seat past, its old courthouse pride, and the hillside view that helps downtown and the ocean feel connected.
