Blackbird Airpark gives Palmdale the secret-aircraft close-up

Blackbird Airpark gives Palmdale a rare outdoor look at Cold War flight-test aircraft, including an SR-71A, its A-12 predecessor, a D-21 drone, and a U-2D.

Palmdale’s aerospace identity can hide behind desert subdivisions and freeway exits. Blackbird Airpark makes that story much easier to grasp. It puts some of the most unusual Cold War aircraft outside, where a visitor can stand near them and see their shapes up close.

The airpark is tied to the Air Force Flight Test Museum at Edwards Air Force Base and was dedicated in 1991. Its centerpiece is the Blackbird family of aircraft. The display pairs an SR-71A with the earlier A-12, including the first A-12 ever flown. That pairing gives Palmdale a clear way to show the step from secret development to famous high-speed reconnaissance aircraft.

The site also includes a D-21 drone and a U-2D. Those names can sound like alphabet soup until the aircraft are in front of you. Then the place starts to feel like a short lesson in altitude, speed, spying, testing, and the Antelope Valley’s role in work that was often hidden from public view.

It pairs naturally with Joe Davies Heritage Airpark next door. Together, they help explain why Palmdale carries an aerospace identity that reaches well beyond the edge of the high desert.
