Newark business and permit questions meet at Development Services
Newark has a useful one-stop idea for projects that cross departments. The Development Services Center handles building permits, business licenses, payments, planning and development, engineering, and fire code questions.
For a commercial business license, Planning approval comes before the license is issued. Some locations or uses may need a conditional use permit. For building work, applicants send the completed permit application to the permit email, then staff creates the tracking record and sends payment instructions.
That order is helpful for a tenant improvement, new shop, office move, or business that needs signs or building changes. The license, zoning, building, engineering, and fire pieces may not all apply, but it is better to sort them at the same time.
Before you contact the city, gather the address, business activity, floor plan, planned construction, contractor information, and whether anything affects the sidewalk, driveway, utilities, or fire access.
