Moreno Valley grew from three older communities

Moreno Valley became a city in 1984, bringing together the older communities of Moreno, Sunnymead, and Edgemont during a major growth period.

Moreno ValleySunnymeadEdgemontcity history

Moreno Valley is a big city now, but its name makes more sense when you know it began as several older communities sharing one valley.

The three names to know are Moreno, Sunnymead, and Edgemont. Sunnymead Boulevard was first paved in 1936, when only a few homes dotted Sunnymead and Moreno. Edgemont started developing in 1940. For years, these were unincorporated rural communities under Riverside County, shaped by roads, open land, March Field nearby, and later waves of growth.

The city came together in 1984. Residents in Moreno, Sunnymead, and Edgemont voted to incorporate as the City of Moreno Valley during a time when the area was growing fast. A later city planning document notes that the first general plan was adopted in 1988.

The city feels different from an old downtown town that grew from one main street. Moreno Valley is more like a valley that joined its pieces, then had to build city services, plans, parks, roads, and identity while many people were arriving.

Knowing that makes the map easier to read. The city is not one simple origin point. It is a shared valley story, with older names still sitting under the modern city name.
