Imperial Beach Pier keeps the town pointed at the Pacific
Imperial Beach's pier, plaza, surf history, and broad beach views make the city's small-town coast identity easy to understand.
Imperial Beach is easy to picture once you stand near the pier. The city has 3.5 miles of beach, big views, and a wooden pier that pulls the town’s attention straight toward the Pacific.
The pier area is more than scenery. Portwood Pier Plaza ties together the beach, grass, picnic areas, a small play space, public art, and the start of a walk out over the water. It feels like the front room of the city.
The surf story gives the place another layer. Imperial Beach points to early big-wave surfing at the Tijuana Sloughs, Dempsey Holder in 1937, and Bob Simmons, who helped change modern surfboard design. Those details make the beach feel less generic. This is a real surf town with its own line in California coastal history.
Water checks still matter before some beach plans. The pier and surf story keep the fuller picture in view: Imperial Beach is also a lively beach town with a strong public coast, good walking, and a local identity that faces the ocean.
