Glendale hillside parcels have a local vegetation program

Glendale's Vegetation Management Program inspects High and Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone properties and applies local defensible-space and fuel-modification rules.

Glendalebrush clearancewildfire

Glendale Fire’s Vegetation Management Program covers hillside and canyon properties in High and Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones. Its work includes annual inspections and review or permitting of landscape and fuel-modification plans.

The local fire-code summary says defensible space must be maintained within 100 feet of any nearby combustible building, including a building on adjoining property. The Fire Marshal may require as much as 200 feet in some cases. That is why an owner should check the actual parcel and nearby structures before telling a gardener where the measurement stops.

Use the current VMP page for the inspection letter, parcel portal, contractor list, landscape rules, and complaint path. Check it before changing hillside landscaping, responding to a notice, or planning work near native vegetation.

Zone 0 is still a moving rulemaking issue. Glendale’s January 2026 notice said the proposed state rules were not then in effect. Treat its five-foot cleanup advice as useful risk reduction, but confirm the current rule on the VMP page before calling it a legal requirement.
