Marshall Gold Discovery keeps El Dorado County tied to 1848
Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park in Coloma marks the 1848 gold find on the South Fork of the American River, with a museum, sawmill replica, historic buildings, trails, and picnic areas.
El Dorado County has a lot of mountain and river scenery, but Coloma is one of its clearest history stops. Marshall Gold Discovery State Historic Park marks the place where James Marshall found gold in 1848 on the South Fork of the American River.
The park has much more than the roadside marker. It has a visitor center and museum, a replica sawmill, historic buildings, picnic areas, and trails that connect the museum area with the gold discovery site.
Standing near the river and mill setting makes the Gold Rush feel less like a textbook chapter. It is easier to understand why a small find in Coloma changed California so quickly.
Confirm hours, day-use details, and event notices before going. Dogs are allowed on leash on trails and in the river area, but not inside buildings.
