The Knox House keeps El Cajon's old hotel story close

The Knox House Museum is an old hotel building that El Cajon bought, moved, and kept as a local-history focus near downtown.

El CajonKnox HouseLocal History

El Cajon has grown into a busy East County city, but the Knox House gives it an older scene you can picture.

The building was once a hotel. In 1972, the city bought it from the Mathews Estate and moved it to its current spot so it could serve as a local-history focus. The city handles the outside of the building and the grounds, while Historical Society members care for the inside and help with tours.

That split tells you something nice about local history work. It often takes both pieces: the city saving the structure, and volunteers keeping the rooms, objects, and stories alive.

The Knox House is a simple way to slow El Cajon down and see the older valley town inside the modern streets.
