Almanac note · Money and taxes
California sales tax works best as an address check
California has a statewide sales and use tax base rate, but city, county, and district taxes can make the right rate depend on the exact address.
California sales tax starts with a statewide base rate, but that is not always the number on the receipt. Some cities and counties have district taxes, and more than one district tax can apply in the same spot.
Use the exact address. A ZIP code or mailing city can cross a boundary. CDTFA gives an address lookup so you can put in the real location, make sure the map point matches, and see the rate in effect for that address.
Use that habit for a business sale, a vehicle estimate, a large purchase, or a receipt that looks wrong. Rates and boundary lines can change, so treat a saved number like a dated snapshot, not a forever answer.
Where to see it
Use CDTFA's rate page and address lookup when a receipt, estimate, sale, or business question depends on the local rate.
