California smog checks start with the DMV renewal notice
Use the DMV notice to confirm whether and where a smog check is required; a passing certificate is valid for 90 days and does not by itself complete registration renewal.
Start with the DMV renewal notice. If it calls for a smog check, use the station type printed there. A vehicle sent to a STAR station must use a STAR-certified station. Before paying, search the plate or VIN in BAR’s official station tool. The VIN is the vehicle identification number.
The station sends a passing certificate to DMV electronically. BAR says the certificate is good for 90 days. Finish the DMV renewal and pay the needed fees within that time. Passing the smog test does not renew the registration by itself. It also does not allow driving with an expired registration.
A renewal smog test is generally due every other year. The timing and exceptions depend on the model year, fuel, weight, county, and type of deal. Sales, family transfers, out-of-state vehicles, and failed tests may follow different rules. Check the current DMV and BAR pages for that vehicle. Do not carry over a rule from another car or deal.
