Recall searches are useful after a secondhand buy
CPSC recall tools help with consumer products; food, medicine, and vehicles use other agencies, so identify the item before choosing the search.
Secondhand finds can be great. A quick recall search is just part of bringing the item home, especially for baby gear, heaters, tools, furniture, bikes, appliances, and anything with a battery.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission search covers consumer products. Food, medicine, and vehicles use other federal agencies, and Recalls.gov can point you to the right one. Use the brand, model number, product name, serial number, and date code when the item has them.
This is most helpful before the item becomes daily life. Take a picture of the label while it is still in the driveway or garage. If a recall matches, stop and follow that notice’s exact remedy. A recall can apply only to certain models or date codes, and a recalled item should not be sold or given away unless the approved remedy has made it safe to do so.
