Use the fire hazard map, then confirm the locally adopted zone
The state viewer is a starting point: State Responsibility Area maps are effective, while Local Responsibility Area recommendations must be confirmed with the city or county.
Enter the address in the Office of the State Fire Marshal viewer. Check whether it is in a State Responsibility Area or a Local Responsibility Area. The address pin only helps you reach the map. It is not a parcel-level legal finding. Zoom in and check the zone boundary. If a permit, disclosure, or duty depends on the answer, ask the local fire or building office.
Fire Hazard Severity Zones show long-term hazard. The map looks at things such as vegetation, terrain, and fire weather. It does not measure the current fire-safety work on one property. It also does not predict whether that property will burn. The State Fire Marshal says the maps do not set insurance rates or decide whether insurance is available.
The State Responsibility Area map took effect on April 1, 2024. The state’s Local Responsibility Area layers are recommendations. A city or county adoption process sets the official local map. Save the map date and layer you checked. Then confirm the adopted zone and any stricter local rule with that city or county.
