License and ID renewals have a few paths
DMV renewal pages help people sort online renewal, mail renewal, office visits, address updates, and renewal status without mixing them together.
A renewal notice is easiest to handle when you first separate the job. Renewing a regular license, renewing an ID card, changing an address, replacing a lost card, and applying for REAL ID are not the same errand.
DMV keeps online renewal, general license-and-ID information, and status checking in separate places. Many people can start online, but some renewals still need an office visit, a test, an updated photo, or extra documents. The notice and DMV account are the best clues for that part.
Keep the renewal notice, current card, mailing address, and any DMV confirmation together until the new card arrives. If the card is close to expiring, leave extra time for mail and appointment delays. A simple status check can save a second trip.
