A California move does not update every address at once
Report a new address to DMV within 10 days, verify the Motor Voter result, and separately update utilities, tax records, and local accounts.
Tell DMV about a new home or mailing address within 10 days. Update the driver license or ID record. Also name each vehicle or vessel record that needs the new address.
This change updates DMV’s records. It does not print a new card by itself. It also does not update utilities, county taxes, tolls, schools, or local permits.
For an eligible voter, some DMV work also sends voter information through California Motor Voter. This generally happens with a driver license, ID, or address change unless the person opts out. Still, do not assume the voter update worked. Check your status with the Secretary of State or county elections office. This is most important after a move to a new county.
The usual voter registration deadline is 15 days before an election. An eligible voter who misses it may use conditional voter registration through Election Day. Start with the county elections office or a vote center. Safe at Home participants should not use the public online form. They should follow that program’s confidential-registration steps.
Finish with a short list of other accounts. Include power, water, trash, property-tax mail, insurance, banks, tolls, parking, schools, and any local account tied to the address.
