Chain controls can change before the summit

Caltrans road condition and chain-control pages help drivers check the exact highway before crossing snowy mountain routes.

Caltranschain controlswinter driving

Mountain driving can change from clear to chain-control country faster than a valley driver expects. That is true on Sierra passes, the Grapevine, mountain resort roads, and high desert routes after a cold storm.

Caltrans road condition and chain-control pages are the clean first check. Look up the exact highway, direction, and segment before leaving, then check again close to the climb. A screenshot from yesterday is weak protection in a moving storm.

Carry the equipment the route may require, know whether your vehicle and tires fit the posted control, and leave extra time. If the road closes, treat that as the answer for the moment. The better trip is the one that waits instead of testing a snowy grade.
