California auto repair problems start with the paper trail
Start with the estimate, authorizations, final invoice, and a written request to the shop; BAR can take a complaint if the repair dispute remains unresolved.
If a California auto repair goes wrong, save the paper trail. Keep the estimate, authorizations, final bill, messages, photos, dates, names, and shop details. Ask the shop in writing to explain the charge, work, warranty, or missing paper. Keep its reply.
BAR says the shop must give you an estimate and get authorization before repairs. It must get new authorization before extra work raises the price. Authorization may be written, oral, or electronic. If you want the replaced parts, ask for them before you approve the repair. Compare the final bill with the work and price you approved.
If the shop does not fix the problem, file with the Bureau of Automotive Repair. BAR may mediate the complaint or investigate a possible violation. Filing a complaint alone does not establish a violation or assure a refund.
Some matters are outside BAR’s jurisdiction. Its complaint page lists repairs done outside California and several vehicle or business categories. If your case falls there, use the referral on that page.
