Knott's Berry Farm grew from berries, chicken dinners, and crowds
Buena Park's Knott's Berry Farm story began with a family farm, boysenberries, Cordelia Knott's chicken dinners, and small attractions that grew into a major theme park.
Buena Park has one of California’s best roadside-grown stories. Knott’s Berry Farm did not begin as a polished theme park with a grand gate. It began with a family farm, berries, food, and people willing to wait.
During the Great Depression, Walter Knott found success growing boysenberries in Orange County. Cordelia Knott opened a tea shop in 1934, serving fried chicken and boysenberry pie. The meals became popular enough that the Knotts needed a way to keep waiting customers happy. The Old West attraction came from that very practical problem.
That is what makes the place memorable. The theme park grew out of real roadside habits: stop, eat, buy preserves, wait your turn, look around, and bring the family back. Rides and live shows came later, and the park now covers a much larger world of Ghost Town, Camp Snoopy, seasonal events, food, and big attractions.
For Buena Park, Knott’s is a big reason the city has such a strong entertainment identity. The local story still has a farm stand under it, with boysenberries, chicken dinners, and a family business that kept adding reasons for people to stay a little longer.
